This is another tutorial that was put together after-the-fact. Thus, it's not perfect and you'll have to improvise a bit as you go. Just do what looks good to you. If you have any questions, you can find a contact form on the About This Girl page. Please don't hesitate to ask.
Choose a worsted weight yarn in any content you'd like. I'd suggest something machine washable and durable. If it's a fuzzy yarn, you may consider lining your case. You can find instructions for lining it at the bottom of this tutorial. Otherwise, choose a very non-fuzzy yarn. My gauge with this yarn on US 7 needles was about 4 stitches per inch. The row gauge is not as important because you can easily add more rows.
You also need some kind of closure system. I don't recommend the one you see in the center picture up there. It's weak and cumbersome. You may consider sewing a buttonhole flap to the back of the cover and using that. Or, instead of binding off the back edge, keep knitting flat in garter stitch and incorporate buttonholes into the flap. I have no experience with making buttonholes this way, but you might find instructions on YouTube.
This tutorial is written assuming you know how to do the following: provisional cast-on, knit stitch, purl stitch, binding off in seed stitch; sewing on buttons, (making buttonholes should you use them), sewing (if you are going to line it).
(The pattern is written without the striping. If you want to use two colors and create stripes, my striping pattern is at the bottom of this page. Begin in your first color and after unzipping the provisional cast-on edge, refer to the bottom of this page to create the stripes.)
To begin, provisionally cast on 18 stitches (chain about 24, then pick up 18 from the middle).
Row 1: Knit across, turn.
Row 2: Purl across, turn.
Unzip your provisional cast-on and knit across the 17 resulting stitches, then make one (36 stitches total around).
Now knit around in stockinette until the cover measures about one inch less than the length of the Kindle. I knit 38 rounds to achieve this, but your's may require more or less rounds.
Work top edging in seed stitch or garter or ribbing--whatever you'd prefer.
Bind off in pattern.
Creating Stripes:
If you want strips, work two colors as follows: begin with color A and knit the cast-on the first 3 rounds with color A; switch to color B and continue as follows:
*3 rounds color B, 2 rounds color A, 3 rounds color B, 1 round color A, 3 rounds color B, 2 rounds color A, 3 rounds color B*, 3 rounds color A, then repeat from * to * once more. This gave me the 38 rounds I needed. If you need more or less, adjust accordingly. Or, better yet, make up your own striping pattern!
